Western Botanicals has been formulating since 1999, and the R&D team develops from a concept, from a competitor product you want bettered, or from a spec you already own. Flavor work is done at your actual serving size rather than at a convenient one. Pilot runs happen on the equipment the commercial batch will use.

Turnkey or tolling, whichever keeps the line moving

Turnkey

We source the ingredients, supply packaging, run production, test each lot and deliver finished goods. You approve the spec and the claims. Most brands that come to us with a concept rather than a formula take this route.

Tolling

You send material, packaging, or both. A single botanical or the entire bill of materials. We supply the certified facility, the processing, the testing and the documentation.

Arizona brands with their own grower or extractor relationships use tolling to keep them. Material ships in, gets processed and tested here, and goes back out as finished product, with your sourcing intact and your supplier still your supplier.

Near enough to come back more than once

A single tour tells you a facility is clean. Coming back during development tells you whether a manufacturer can actually build what you described.

Phoenix is a short flight from Salt Lake City and about 620 miles by road, so Arizona brands tend to visit twice: once while the formula is being worked out, and again for the pilot or first commercial run. Some drive up with material rather than shipping it.

Verification built into the formula, not added after

Testing criteria are written into your Finished Product Specification during development, so the panel a lot has to pass is decided before the first commercial run rather than negotiated after one fails. Every finished lot is tested for heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead via ICP/MS, plus total aerobic microbial count, yeast and mold, coliforms, E. coli and salmonella.

About one in ten of our people work in quality only. Our lab has sent thousands of shipments to ISO accredited partners, worked through Amazon’s requirements and built deep experience with Eurofins.

Are you an Arizona based supplement manufacturer?

No. Our campus is in Spanish Fork, Utah, about 620 miles from Phoenix. We manufacture for Arizona brands from there, and the distance is short enough that material, samples and people move between us without much friction.

Can we bring ingredients or a benchtop sample to you in person?

Yes, and Arizona brands do. Some drive material up rather than freight it, particularly for small development quantities. Tell us before you travel so the R&D team has time blocked and receiving knows what is arriving.

How does summer heat affect shipments into Phoenix or Tucson?

It affects timing more than product. Delivery windows are agreed at quoting, and for summer deliveries it is worth avoiding a load sitting at a dock over a weekend. Raise it when we schedule, and we will plan the departure around your receiving hours.

We have a concept but no formula. Where does that start?

With R&D. The team develops from a target serving, a claim set and a format, builds a working formula, runs flavor iterations for powders and liquids, and produces a pilot batch. That happens before your production purchase order, so you are not funding a commercial run on an unproven formula.

We sell herbal tinctures. What extraction bases do you run?

Water, glycerin and alcohol, along with syrups, mineral suspensions and oil blends, filled from 5ml to 32oz in HDPE, PET or glass with dropper or phenolic closures. Botanical work is where this company started, so it is core capability rather than an outsourced format.

How is R&D work priced?

Separately from production and scoped before it begins, so you see what development costs before you commit. It sits ahead of the purchase order in our process for that reason. The preliminary quote will tell you whether your project needs R&D at all.

Who do we actually deal with once production starts?

A customer success contact who stays with the account, plus a Friday status report on every open order carrying promise dates and any flags. You should not have to chase an update or explain your project again to whoever answers.
